Phinisi Glossary
A reference of the maritime terms, vessel parts, and Indonesian sailing vocabulary you will encounter aboard. Bookmarked by guests preparing for their first phinisi charter.
Phinisi
The Vessel
- Phinisi
- Traditional two-masted Indonesian sailing yacht, hand-built in Sulawesi by the Bugis people. Origins as Spice Trade vessels 500+ years ago. Modern tourism phinisi range 25-60m with en-suite cabins, working sails, and full crew.
- Bugis
- Indonesian seafaring people from South Sulawesi who have built phinisi vessels continuously since the 1500s. Master shipwrights pass techniques father-to-son for 25+ generations.
- Bira
- Coastal village on the southern tip of Sulawesi where most modern tourism phinisi are built. Visit programs available as trip extensions.
- Tana Beru
- Adjacent village to Bira, also a major phinisi shipyard. Known for larger luxury phinisi (50m+).
- Pinisi
- Alternate spelling of “Phinisi” — both used interchangeably. UNESCO recognized “Pinisi” as Indonesian Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2017.
- Kapal Phinisi
- “Kapal” means boat in Indonesian. Often used in Indonesian-language searches: “kapal phinisi labuan bajo” = phinisi boat in Labuan Bajo.
- Lamima Class
- The reference luxury phinisi standard. 65m, 6-cabin, hand-built 2014. Multiple “Lamima-class” vessels now exist with similar specs and finish.
Hull & Rig
- Bowsprit
- The forward-pointing spar at the bow of the phinisi where sails are attached. Distinctive long bowsprit is signature phinisi silhouette.
- Sundeck
- The open upper deck where guests lounge, sun, and dine. Premium phinisi have sundecks with cushions, lounge chairs, sometimes a jacuzzi.
- Saloon
- Indoor lounge area with dining table, sometimes a small bar. Used during rough-weather meals or evening relaxation.
- Tender
- The smaller boat (5–8m) carried by the phinisi for shore landings and dive operations. Usually inflatable RIB or aluminum craft.
- Galley
- The boat’s kitchen. Onboard chef cooks all meals fresh daily.
- En-suite cabin
- Guest cabin with private attached bathroom (shower + toilet + sink). Standard on all our charters.
- Compressor
- Air compressor for refilling scuba tanks aboard. Standard on our diving-tier charters.
Indonesian Maritime Geography
- Benoa Harbor
- Bali’s main commercial harbor on the southeast coast. 15-30 minutes from Seminyak, Sanur, and Nusa Dua. Most of our charters depart from here.
- Lombok Strait
- Deep-water pass between Bali and Lombok. Pilot whales, sperm whales, and oceanic mantas seen year-round. Cross this on every Bali → eastern Indonesia charter.
- Sape Strait
- Narrow channel between Sumbawa and Komodo islands. Whale shark zone March-June. Funnels the Indonesian Throughflow current.
- Wallace Line
- The famous biogeographic boundary running through the Lombok Strait, separating Asian and Australian fauna. You sail across it on Bali → Komodo trips.
- Coral Triangle
- Marine region centered on Indonesia, Philippines, and Papua New Guinea. Highest marine biodiversity on Earth. Raja Ampat sits at its center.
- Manta Point
- Famous reef-manta cleaning station on the southwest tip of Nusa Penida. Daily encounters May-November.
- Pink Beach
- Beach in Komodo National Park with distinctive pink sand from crushed red coral mixed with white sand. Snorkeling stop on most Komodo charters.
- Padar Island
- Three-bay island in Komodo with iconic sunrise viewpoint. Hiking + photography stop on Komodo itineraries.
- Misool
- Southern island group of Raja Ampat (West Papua). Highest reef biodiversity in the world. Soft coral gardens, mantas, walking sharks.
- Wayag
- The iconic mushroom-shaped karst islands of northern Raja Ampat. Most photographed location in the region.
- Dampier Strait
- Central channel of Raja Ampat. Strong currents, extreme fish density. Cape Kri dive site holds record for most fish species in single dive (374).
Charter Operations
- KSOP
- Indonesian harbormaster authority. Annual vessel inspections required for tourism operation. All our boats are KSOP-certified.
- PADI
- Professional Association of Diving Instructors. Worldwide diving certification body. Our diving charters use PADI-certified divemasters and instructors.
- Liveaboard
- Multi-night charter where guests sleep aboard. As distinct from day cruises (return to port same evening).
- Per-boat pricing
- Charter rate covers the entire vessel regardless of guest count (vs per-cabin or per-person). Our standard pricing model.
- BYO alcohol
- “Bring your own” — guests provide alcohol for the trip. Indonesian taxes on alcohol importation make BYO standard practice. We can stock at cost as alternative.
- Charter brief
- Captain’s safety + itinerary briefing on the morning of departure. Standard 30 minutes.
