The Route

Bali to Raja Ampat: Sailing Route Overview

The classic eastern crossing passes through three legendary marine zones — the Komodo region, the Banda Sea, and the Halmahera Sea. Each has its own character, wildlife, and diving culture.

1.

Bali → Komodo (3 nights)

Cross the Lombok Strait, anchor at Moyo, traverse the Sape Strait. See whale sharks, pilot whales, Komodo dragons. Dives at Manta Alley and Castle Rock.

2.

Komodo → Banda Sea (3 nights)

Open-water passage southeast through deep ocean. Pilot whale and orca sightings frequent. Stop at Banda Neira — historic spice trade port. Dive Suanggi and Hatta Island walls.

3.

Banda Sea → Misool (2 nights)

Northeast through the Halmahera Sea. Arrive at Misool — Raja Ampat’s southern islands, the world’s most biodiverse reef ecosystem. Mantas, sharks, sweetlips, soft coral gardens.

4.

Misool → Dampier Strait (2 nights)

North through Raja Ampat’s central archipelago. Dive sites Cape Kri, Sardine Reef, Blue Magic. Highest fish density anywhere on Earth.

5.

Wayag (1 night)

The iconic mushroom-shaped karst islands of Wayag. Sunrise hike to viewpoint, lagoon snorkel. Most photographed location in Raja Ampat.

6.

Disembark Sorong

Final morning: tender to Sorong port, fly Sorong → Makassar → Denpasar (~7 hours total flight time). Some travelers extend to Bird’s Head for additional 2–3 nights of diving.

Best Time

When is the Best Season for Bali to Raja Ampat by Boat?

Raja Ampat reverses the typical Indonesian seasonality — its calmest months are when the rest of Indonesia is in wet season. This is critical for choosing dates.

October–April (PEAK)

Optimal months. Calm seas across the entire route, peak diving visibility 25–35m, manta aggregation season at Dampier and Misool. Most charters operate this window.

May–June (Shoulder)

Transitional. Most operators wind down. Weather variable. Some Bali-side legs feasible but Raja Ampat itself starts having afternoon rain.

July–September (CLOSED)

Southern monsoon brings strong winds and rough seas across the Banda Sea. We do not operate this route during these months for safety reasons. Wait or pick a Bali → Komodo trip instead.
