General

Phinisi Basics

Most first-time guests ask these.

What is a phinisi?
A phinisi is a traditional two-masted Indonesian sailing yacht, hand-built in Sulawesi by Bugis shipwrights. They date back 500+ years as trading vessels and have been adapted for tourism since the 1990s. Modern tourism phinisi range from 25m to 60m and have full crew, en-suite cabins, and dive operations.
Do phinisi actually sail or just motor?
Both. They have working sails (typically 7+ on a full vessel) and a diesel auxiliary engine. Most cruising is under engine for schedule reliability, but sails are deployed when wind allows — and most charters spend at least one afternoon under sail. The aesthetic is the sails; the timekeeping is the engine.
Is it safe?
Yes — no major safety incident across our 12-vessel network in 5 years of operation. Every vessel passes annual KSOP (Indonesian harbormaster) inspection. Crew first-aid certified. EPIRB, life rafts, and marine radio standard. Children’s life vests carried. We don’t sail in conditions exceeding 25 knots wind.
Booking

Booking, Deposits, and Cancellations

The contract details.

How do I book?
Three steps. (1) WhatsApp us your dates and group. (2) We send a written quote with 2–3 vessel options. (3) You pick one, we send a contract and 30% deposit invoice. The 70% balance is due 30 days before sailing.
Do you accept credit cards?
We accept bank transfer (preferred — IDR or USD), Visa/Mastercard via Stripe (+3% processing), and crypto (USDC, USDT — at spot). Cash on arrival is accepted up to IDR 30M.
What if I need to cancel?
Free reschedule up to 14 days out. Full refund up to 30 days out. Inside 14 days, deposit is non-refundable but transferable to a future trip with the same vessel within 12 months. Force-majeure (cyclone, eruption, government closure) gets full refund regardless of timing.
Travel insurance?
We strongly recommend it — most trips don’t go wrong, but when something does, it’s usually outside our control (flight cancellations, illness, weather closures). We don’t sell insurance; reputable providers include World Nomads, SafetyWing, and Allianz Travel.
Aboard

Life on a Phinisi

What it’s actually like.

How is the food?
Better than most travelers expect. Onboard chef cooks fresh — typically Indonesian breakfast options + a daily Western/Indonesian lunch and dinner. Seafood is sourced from villages we pass. Dietary restrictions accommodated with 7 days notice.
Is there Wi-Fi?
Most vessels have Indonesian 4G that works near shore (Bali Strait, Lombok, Sumbawa). Open ocean stretches and some Komodo islands have no signal. We provide a satellite link for emergencies. Most guests appreciate the disconnect.
Is it formal? Do I need fancy clothes?
No. Phinisi life is barefoot and beachwear. Most guests wear swimsuits + t-shirts during the day, light shirts/dresses for dinner. No dress code. One light jacket useful for evening sailing in cooler months (Jul–Sep).
What if I get seasick?
Phinisi don’t roll like motorboats — they’re stable. Most guests don’t experience seasickness. Crew carries Stugeron, Dramamine, and patches for those who do. We choose anchorages over open-ocean overnights when guests are sensitive.

Destinations & Itineraries

Where we sail and what to expect.

What’s the best month to sail?
May–October has the most reliable weather (dry season, less wind, calmer seas). July–August is peak demand and prices are 20% higher. November–April has occasional squalls but boat availability is excellent and prices are better. Manta Point sightings peak May–November.
Can I dive even if I’m not certified?
Yes — ‘discover scuba’ (no cert required, max 12m) is offered for IDR 1.5M per session including instructor + gear. For real diving (cert required), we book through 3 PADI dive centers in Bali for open-water certification (3 days, IDR 6.5M).
Komodo dragons — do we actually see them?
Yes. Komodo and Rinca rangers run guided treks where dragons are essentially guaranteed. Outside June–August (mating season), dragons are docile. Treks are 1–2 hours, easy to moderate difficulty.
What about whales and whale sharks?
Whale sharks frequent the Sape Strait (between Sumbawa and Komodo) Mar–Jun. Cetaceans (pilot whales, sperm whales, dolphins) seen year-round in deep-water passes — the Lombok Strait crossing has the highest sighting rate.

Costs & Booking

Bali Phinisi Cost Questions

The Bali phinisi pricing questions our concierge team answers most. Direct numbers, no estimates.

How much does a phinisi cost from Bali for a couple?
For 2 guests on a 4-night Bali → Moyo charter: IDR 95M total = IDR 11.9M per night per couple, all-in (vessel + crew + meals + transfers). For day cruises only: IDR 18M total, ~USD 575 per person if just the two of you. Phinisi pricing is per-boat — couples pay the same as families of four on the same vessel.
Do you offer shared phinisi charters at lower per-person prices?
No, all our charters are private — the boat is yours. Shared liveaboards do exist in the Indonesian market (typical pricing IDR 8–14M per person per night) but we found quality control too inconsistent across booking platforms. We focused our operation on private charter only.
What is the deposit and refund policy?
30% deposit on contract signing locks the vessel and dates. 70% balance is due 30 days before departure. Free reschedule up to 14 days out. Full refund up to 30 days out. Force-majeure (cyclone, eruption, government closure) gets full refund regardless of timing.
How far in advance should I book?
Day cruises: 1 week minimum, 2-3 weeks during July-August peak. Multi-day charters: 4-6 weeks ahead, 8-12 weeks for premium vessels in peak season. Same-week bookings sometimes work in shoulder season (April-May, September-November) — message us on WhatsApp for instant availability.
