Sustainability

Eco-Conscious Phinisi Charters

Sustainability is not a marketing layer for us — it is operational standard. Reef-safe products mandated, single-use plastic banned aboard, partner relationships with three Indonesian marine NGOs. Every multi-day charter contributes to reef restoration via guest donation match.

🪸

Reef Conservation Match

Bali Phinisi donates 1% of each charter to Coral Triangle Center, Bali Reef Foundation, or Misool Eco Resort Conservation depending on route. Read our values. Guests can match-double their charter contribution as add-on.

🚫

Plastic-Free Aboard

No single-use plastic allowed aboard our vessels. We provide reusable water bottles, glass containers, bamboo utensils. Charter price includes onboard filtered water (unlimited refills).

🐟

Local Fisher Sourcing

All seafood served aboard is purchased directly from village fishermen along our route — supporting local livelihoods and ensuring zero supply-chain emissions. Net-cast fishing only (no longline or trawl).

Sail-Forward Routing

When wind allows, our captain prioritizes sail propulsion over engine. On a typical 7-night charter, 30–40% of distance is covered under sail (saves ~800 liters diesel + 2.1 tonnes CO2e per charter).

🧴

Reef-Safe Standard

Reef-safe sunscreen samples (Sun Bum, Stream2Sea, Thinksport) provided aboard. Octinoxate and oxybenzone products discarded at boarding. We lose <2% of bookings to this policy and consider it cost of integrity.

🐢

Marine Biology Education

Optional marine biologist add-on for charters. PADI Project AWARE certification + 7-year experience leads guests through reef ID, manta behavior, mola mola biology. Especially valuable on diving charters.

FAQ

Sustainable Charter Questions

Are your phinisi truly carbon-neutral?
Not yet — we are sail-forward (30–40% sail) but auxiliary diesel engines remain. We offset remaining emissions via verified Indonesian forestry projects (Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation reforestation). Working toward solar-hybrid by 2027.
How is “reef-safe” verified?
We accept only sunscreens with HEL List compliance (no oxybenzone, octinoxate, octocrylene, homosalate, butylparaben, methylparaben, propylparaben, ethylparaben, ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate, methyl benzylidene camphor, or 4-methyl-benzylidenecamphor). Crew checks all bottles at boarding.
Can I see your conservation impact metrics?
Yes — annual sustainability report shared on request. Last year: IDR 240M donated to NGOs, 2.1 tonnes CO2e/charter offset, 8,000+ single-use plastic items prevented per year.
Are eco-charters more expensive?
~5% premium over standard multi-day rates covering NGO donation, premium reef-safe products, and offset purchase. Most guests consider it worthwhile.
Can I bring my eco-conscious wedding aboard?
Yes — see events page. We coordinate biodegradable decor, locally-sourced catering, reef-safe candles, and reusable signage.

Conservation Partners

Three Marine NGOs We Donate To

1% of every charter is donated to one of three Indonesian marine conservation partners depending on the route. Donation tracked + receipts available to guests.

Coral Triangle Center (Bali)

Indonesian-led NGO focused on coral reef research + community-based marine protected areas across the Coral Triangle. Bali day cruises and Bali → Lombok charters donate here. We have donated IDR 80M+ across 2024-2025.

Bali Reef Foundation

Local Sanur-based reef restoration project. Coral fragment nursery, dive-shop coordinated reef monitoring, education programs for Bali fishing villages. Multi-day charters and luxury charters donate here.

Misool Foundation (West Papua)

Conservation arm of the Misool resort, manages a 300,000-hectare marine protected area in southern Raja Ampat — patrol boats funded by tourism partners. Raja Ampat charters contribute here.

Carbon Math

Honest Carbon Accounting per Charter

A typical 7-night Bali → Komodo phinisi charter generates approximately 5.8 tonnes CO2e (engine fuel + crew transport + provisions). For comparison: a return flight Bali → Komodo + 4-night LBJ-departure charter generates approximately 7.2 tonnes CO2e for the same guest count. Our sail-forward routing saves ~2.1 tonnes.

Engine Fuel

~620L diesel × 2.7 kg CO2e/L = 1.67 tonnes per charter (50% of total).

Crew Logistics

Crew transport, food sourcing, water resupply: ~0.8 tonnes per charter.

Provisions

Local fisher sourcing reduces supply-chain emissions to ~0.3 tonnes vs ~1.2 tonnes for imported provisions.

Offset

Verified Borneo reforestation + mangrove planting offsets remaining 5.8 tonnes per charter. Offset receipts shared with guests post-trip.
