First-time phinisi guests overpack. Cabins are smaller than hotel rooms, the dress code is barefoot beachwear, and most things you’d think to bring are already aboard. Here’s the actual list, broken down by category.

Already aboard (don’t bother bringing)

  • Snorkel gear, fins, masks (multiple sizes)
  • Towels (beach + cabin)
  • Life vests including kid sizes
  • Reef-safe sunscreen samples (small)
  • USB charging cables, universal adapters
  • Hair dryer (in cabins)
  • Basic first-aid (band-aids, antiseptic, painkillers, seasickness meds)
  • Beach toys, paddleboards, kayaks
  • Books and board games

Pack: clothing

  • 2–3 swimsuits (rotate while one dries)
  • 3–5 light shirts/t-shirts
  • 2–3 light dresses or shorts
  • 1 long-sleeve sun-protection top (rashguard works)
  • 1 light jacket or hoodie (evening sail in cooler months)
  • Reef shoes for tender landings
  • Wide-brim sun hat
  • Polarized sunglasses
  • Pajamas/sleepwear

What you don’t need: heels, formal wear, jeans (too hot), heavy jackets, business clothing. Phinisi life is genuinely casual — we’ve never seen anyone overdressed.

Pack: personal

  • Your preferred sunscreen (the boat’s samples may not be enough — bring high SPF)
  • Lip balm with SPF
  • Insect repellent (for Komodo trail walks)
  • Prescription medications (with a few days extra in case of itinerary changes)
  • Seasickness medication if you’re sensitive (we have spares but bring your preferred brand)
  • Your toiletries (cabin amenities are basic)
  • Reef-safe sunscreen if you have a strong preference

Pack: tech

  • Phone + charger (USB on boats; for international plug, bring a universal adapter)
  • GoPro or waterproof phone case (more useful than DSLRs)
  • Drone if licensed (Indonesian drone laws require permits — we can advise)
  • E-reader or Kindle (offline content matters when WiFi drops)
  • Power bank for shore excursions

Bag style

Soft duffels or backpacks beat hard suitcases — phinisi cabins have under-bed storage that fits soft bags but not hard cases. A 60L duffel comfortably holds a week of phinisi gear. Day pack for shore excursions.

What we provide that surprises people

Reef-safe shampoo and conditioner in cabins. Beach robes in luxury vessels. Yoga mats. Onboard chef takes morning requests for breakfast. Crew will do laundry on charters of 5+ nights (handwashing, line dry — bring quick-dry fabrics if this matters).

Cash, cards, and tipping

Charter cost is paid before departure (bank transfer or card). On-board, you’ll only need cash for: alcohol if not BYO (we stock at cost), village souvenirs at shore stops, and additional crew tips. IDR 5M per couple for a 4-night charter is generous; tips are pooled across crew.

Seasonal Packing Adjustments

Indonesian seasons are not subtle, and your packing list shifts with them. Most guests get this wrong on the first phinisi trip from Bali — bringing too much in dry season, too little in wet season. Here is what we tell every charter the week before they arrive.

Dry season (May–October)

  • Lighter packing — temperatures 26–32°C, humidity manageable
  • Strong sun: high SPF (50+), reef-safe brand, lip balm with SPF, wide-brim hat that ties on (windy on deck)
  • Light long-sleeve sun shirt for midday — UV is brutal at 8°S latitude
  • One light jacket for July-August evenings (cooler under sail)

Wet season (November–April)

  • Add: lightweight rain jacket (not poncho — it flaps)
  • Quick-dry everything (cotton stays wet for days aboard during squalls)
  • Waterproof phone pouch — afternoon downpours are sudden
  • One pair of closed-toe shoes for shore excursions on muddy trails

Charter-Specific Gear We Recommend Bringing

The boat provides standard snorkel kit, but if you have your own mask that fits your face properly, bring it. Mask-fit is everything for snorkel comfort, and ill-fitting mask kits ruin Penida and Komodo days for many first-time guests. Same applies to fins if you have a preferred set. Wetsuits or shorty rashguards (1–2mm) are useful for Penida cold-water spots and any October–December trip.

Diving-Specific Packing

If your charter includes diving, bring your dive computer, certification card (digital photo of card is fine), and dive log book. We provide tanks, weights, BCDs, and regs but if you prefer your own regulator, bring it — current and visibility in Komodo and Raja Ampat make familiar gear comforting. Wetsuits 3mm minimum recommended for Komodo where currents and depth bring water down to 24°C.

Photography Gear by Trip Type

Day cruise: phone in waterproof pouch is sufficient. GoPro for underwater shots. Skip DSLRs — they get sea-spray damaged and the boat motion makes long lenses impractical.

Multi-day charter: bring your full kit if you are a serious photographer. Wide-angle for landscape (16–35mm or equivalent), 70–200mm zoom for wildlife (we see whales, dragons, mantas), drone if you are licensed (Indonesian drone laws require permits — we can advise). Storage cards: bring 2x what you think you need. There is no Lightroom catalog cleanup time aboard.

What NOT to Bring

  • Hard suitcases — phinisi cabin storage fits soft duffels only
  • Heels or formal wear — phinisi is barefoot beachwear, no exceptions
  • Heavy beach towels — boat provides quick-dry towels
  • Single-use plastic bottles — banned aboard, we have unlimited filtered water + reusable bottles
  • Drone unless permitted — Indonesian drone laws require advance permits in Komodo and Raja Ampat parks
  • Excessive cash — most onboard purchases (alcohol, dive add-ons) settle on final invoice

Tipping Etiquette

Standard crew gratuity is included in your charter price. Additional tips at end of trip are appreciated but not expected. If you want to tip extra: IDR 500K–1M per crew per night for excellent service is generous and well above local standard. Tip in cash IDR (or USD if no IDR available) — bank transfers don’t reach individual crew. Pool tipping (one envelope to captain who distributes) is the local norm.
