Updated May 2026. Written by the Bali Phinisi planning team based on 800+ trips operated.
If you’re planning a sailing trip in Indonesia and want to skip the domestic flight to Labuan Bajo, this guide covers everything you need to know about chartering a phinisi yacht directly from Bali. We’ve operated over 800 charters from Benoa Harbor since 2018, and the questions below are the ones we answer hourly on WhatsApp.
What is a phinisi (and why charter one from Bali)?
A phinisi is a traditional two-masted Indonesian sailing yacht — hand-built in Sulawesi by Bugis shipwrights using techniques that date back five centuries. Originally cargo vessels for the spice trade, modern tourism phinisi are 25–60 meters long and outfitted with en-suite cabins, working sails, full crews, and dive operations. They’re the most authentic way to see Indonesia’s archipelago.
Most travelers assume a phinisi trip means flying to Labuan Bajo. That used to be true. Since 2018, our operation (and a handful of others) has positioned phinisi vessels permanently in Benoa Harbor in southern Bali, making it possible to step aboard 15 minutes from your villa. We call this the “Bali Departure” model and it now accounts for roughly 40% of phinisi tourism in Indonesia.
Day cruise vs. multi-day charter — which is right for you?
Charters from Bali fall into two clear categories:
Day cruises (8 hours): Single-day private charters from Benoa to Nusa Penida, Lembongan, or Bali’s south coast. Best for travelers with a tight Bali schedule who still want a phinisi experience. Pricing starts at IDR 18M for the entire boat (up to 12 guests). Read our full day cruise guide for itineraries.
Multi-day charters (2–14 nights): Overnight sailings to Lombok, Moyo Island, Sumbawa, or all the way to Komodo. You sleep aboard. Pricing starts at IDR 24M per night for the standard vessel. Best for travelers prioritizing the journey over the destination. Full multi-day routes here.
The shortest meaningful overnight option is 2 nights (Bali → Lombok → Bali). The most popular is 4 nights to Moyo Island. The full Bali → Komodo run is 7 nights and replaces what most operators sell as a 4-night LBJ-departure trip plus 2 extra flights.
How much does a phinisi charter cost?
Phinisi pricing is per-charter (not per-person), which catches first-time guests off guard. The boat is yours whether you’re a couple or a group of ten — the price is the same. This means phinisi work best for groups of 4–10 people, where the per-head cost approaches what a luxury hotel suite would cost anyway.
Rough cost guidance for 2026 from Bali:
- Sunset cruise (3hr): from IDR 9M (~USD 575) for the boat
- Day cruise standard (8hr): from IDR 18M (~USD 1,150)
- Day cruise luxury (8hr): from IDR 32M (~USD 2,050)
- Multi-day standard (per night): from IDR 24M (~USD 1,540)
- Multi-day premium (per night): from IDR 38M (~USD 2,440)
- Multi-day luxury (per night): from IDR 65M (~USD 4,170)
What’s included: all fuel, port fees, crew, meals, soft drinks, snorkel gear, tender boat, hotel transfers in southern Bali, and Indonesian taxes (PPN 11%). What’s extra: scuba diving (+IDR 1.2M per dive per person), alcohol (BYO or stocked at cost), photography, and special chef requests. Full price breakdown on our pricing page.
When is the best time to sail from Bali?
Indonesia has two distinct seasons that affect phinisi sailing:
Dry season (May–October): The reliable choice. Calmer seas, predictable weather, and peak visibility for snorkeling and diving. May–November is also when manta rays are most active at Manta Point (Nusa Penida). July–August is peak demand — book 6+ weeks ahead for the best vessels. Prices in peak season are roughly 20% higher than shoulder season.
Wet season (November–April): Better deals, fewer crowds, occasional afternoon squalls. December–February has the lowest charter prices but planners adjust routes daily based on weather. Multi-day charters reroute to leeward bays during forecasted weather. Day cruises sometimes shift to morning-only schedules.
Across all 800+ trips we’ve operated, our cancellation rate due to weather is under 4%. Captain reroutes much more often than we cancel.
Where do phinisi from Bali actually sail?
Five primary destinations, ordered by sail time:
- Nusa Penida & Lembongan (1.5 hrs each way) — day cruise destinations. Manta Point, Crystal Bay, Kelingking. Best for snorkelers and beginners.
- Bali South Coast (under 1 hr) — sunset cruises and bad-weather routes. Pandawa, Green Bowl, Uluwatu cliffs viewed from sea.
- Lombok & Gili Islands (5–6 hrs sail) — overnight destination. Gili Trawangan, Sekotong Bay, Pink Beach (Lombok). Calmer water than Bali’s south.
- Moyo Island & Sumbawa (12 hrs sail) — premium overnight destination. Waterfalls, Satonda crater lake, surf breaks. Wildlife-rich.
- Komodo National Park (36 hrs each way) — the full crossing. Pink Beach, Komodo dragons, Padar viewpoint. Most clients fly back from LBJ to save 36 hours.
What’s it like aboard?
Phinisi life is barefoot, beachwear, and offline. Most boats have Indonesian 4G near shore but no signal in open water. Three meals a day are cooked fresh by the onboard chef — typically Indonesian breakfast options, Western/Indonesian lunches, and seafood dinners. Dietary restrictions are accommodated with 7 days notice.
Cabins are smaller than hotel rooms but well-appointed: en-suite shower, AC, queen or twin beds, blackout curtains. Most vessels have 4–8 cabins. Common areas include a sundeck (where most lounging happens), a saloon (indoor lounge for rough-weather passages), and a dining area on deck.
Crews are Indonesian — typically captain, 2 deck crew, chef, stewardess, and an English-speaking host. Tipping is included in the charter price; additional tipping is appreciated but not expected.
What to bring (and what’s already aboard)
Aboard already: snorkel gear, fins, masks, life vests, towels, beach gear, charging cables (USB), and reef-safe sunscreen samples. Most vessels have a small library, board games, and basic medical supplies.
Pack: swimsuits (2–3), light shirts and dresses, one warm layer (evenings can be cool), reef shoes, a wide-brim hat, prescription medications, your own preferred sunscreen, and any specialty diving gear (we provide standard kit). Phinisi cabins have limited storage, so pack soft duffels rather than hard suitcases.
